Kahala is proud to collaborate with Birdwell, a brand that shares our passion for quality and style. We are excited to introduce the Kahala x Birdwell collection featuring the Kahala take on the iconic Birdwell board shorts, the 311 Boardshort made with our custom Birdwell Duke's Pareo print.

The Birdwell brand has a rich history dating back to 1961 when surf mom Carrie Birdwell Mann created the first Birdie board shorts for her sons. Her inspiration came from the sails of boats docked at Newport Beach and she sought to make safer and more functional shorts for surfers. Her signature nylon fabric, SurfNyl™️, and two-layer construction with triple seams made Birdwell an American icon.

The 311 Boardshort is a medium-length version of Ms. Birdwell's original design, which has been improved over 50 years of field testing by surfers and lifeguards. Each pair is hand-cut from our proprietary SurfNyl™️ fabric and sewn by expert craftspeople in Santa Ana, California. With a button fly, adjustable tab closure, and contrast stitch, these shorts strike the perfect balance between the past and present.

Designed with the same attention to detail and quality as our iconic 311 board shorts, the Sea Trunk features an elastic waistband for added comfort. Plus, it's crafted with our 100% cotton broadcloth, which is printed with our custom Birdwell Duke's Pareo print based on our 1960s heritage design.

Birdwell's legacy began in 1961 when Carrie Birdwell Mann hand-sewed the first pairs of board shorts for her sons in Southern California. The inspiration for the design came from the sails of boats docked at nearby Newport Beach. The original Birdie shorts were created to be safer and more functional than the canvas shorts popular among surfers at the time. Ms. Mann worked with off-the-shelf spinnaker cloth before commissioning Birdwell's signature nylon fabric, SurfNyl™️. The two-layer construction and triple seams ensure durability, making Birdies an American icon.
